Dear Parents,
Welcome back to a new school academic year. It is really lovely to see both yourselves and the children on the gate. The children look so smart with their uniform, new shoes and beautiful hair. It really is wonderful to see. We have started the year as we mean to go on with a focus on raising our academic standards even further and also our Kindness, Manners and Respect throughout the school. These are our core values that the children know well and something that we all reiterate to the children on a daily basis.
Forms 1 and 2 had a very exciting start to the term with their Explorer day on Tuesday. This was a hook into their topic for ‘X Marks the Spot’. The children had the opportunity to explore the local Maldon surroundings . The children and staff also dressed up as Explorers and we had some wonderful outfits. It was a fantastic day which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.
Congratulations to our new Form Captains who are Aida in Reception, Lennie in Form 1, Emily in Form 2, Noah in Form 3, Rudy in Form 4 and Rose in Form 5. Our Sports Captains are Meghan, Max and Olivia. House Captains have been awarded to Charlie for Australia, Archie for Canada and Joshua for New Zealand.
Finally, a big welcome to our new starters where we have Brianna, Louie, Hugo, Ezra, Max, Isabelle and Amelia. They have all fitted in beautifully and are already displaying our Maldon Court standards. I know you will make both them and their families feel welcome at our school.

Nursery
Nursery have had a lovely week! As it has been our first full week of term, we have now met all of our lovely new families. The children have been enjoying settling into Nursery and making new friends as they play, learn and explore together.
We have been enjoying our About Me topic as we get to know each other and discover some of our favourite things. Throughout the week, the children have enjoyed exploring our role play zone, which is set up as a home. They have been busy cooking and serving each other food, as well as using the teapot to pour tea for their friends.
Our maths zone has also been very interesting, with lots of colourful numbered houses for the children to investigate. They enjoyed opening each house to reveal a different animal inside. This created lots of fun and exciting learning as we explored colours, numbers and animal noises all at once!
We have also enjoyed a range of sensory and fun tuff trays, which our younger members of Nursery have particularly loved. They have been using their hands and fingers to explore the different textures and materials, supporting their sensory development and fine motor skills as they play.

RECEPTION
Reception had a great time exploring Leeches Garden for their first Welly Wednesday trip this week. The children walked very sensibly to the garden, making sure to stay safe when crossing the road. They had a great time exploring the garden and climbed logs and the apple tree. They also made some lovely, cosy dens for hedgehogs and squirrels using sticks, twigs and leaves.

FORMs 1 and 2
Forms 1 and 2 had a wonderful start to the academic year kicking off our ‘X marks the Spot’ topic in style with ‘Explorers’ Day’! We started by considering what a good explorer would need! We had a show and tell of our marvellous items that we made over the holidays and we played some drama games where we explored movement in different environments. In the afternoon, we collaged pictures of our favourite places in our town as we are beginning with our local places. The following day (when the rain has subsided!) we embarked on a walking tour of Maldon to spot features around the town. We saw the Moot Hall, All Saints church, the heritage centre and we even learnt about Edward Bright, the fat man of Maldon and his 7 ‘hundred’ men. It was a lovely chance to really look and observe the points of interest that we walk past regularly in a more considered way. Our little explorers were fantastic!

Form 4
This week we started our new history topic about the Anglo-Saxons, Picts and Scots. We used archaeological evidence to learn more about who may have been buried at Sutton Hoo. In English, we have been using open questions to interview eyewitnesses and gather as much information as possible to write a newspaper report and, in science, we have started sorting and classifying and created a biscuit a classification key. What a busy week!
