Dear Parents,
The children are fully in the swing of being back in school and are embracing every opportunity given to them. It really is so wonderful and heartwarming to see.
This week, we have been incredibly busy (as always) with our sporting fixtures. On Monday we visited Felsted School for a Forms 4,5 and 6 Hockey tournament. This was an excellent opportunity for the children and they truly excelled. In addition to this, we then visited Colchester Northern Gateway for a Cross Country tournament on Wednesday. In the driving, torrential rain and under the windiest, chilliest conditions, children in Forms 3 and 4 competed against a number of other schools in the Colchester area. I cannot begin to say how proud I am of each and every one of them. Please see further on in the newsletter for more information about these events.
On Tuesday, we were delighted to welcome in Essex Fire Service to provide children in Form 3 about Home Safety and children in Form 6 about Online Safety and Respect. These are such important subjects in this day and age and we are very grateful that the children had these informative talks.
Congratulations to Rosie in Form1 who won a Cool to be Kind award this week in Celebration Assembly.
Finally, I am really looking forward to welcoming people to the Quiz Night tonight being held in the School Hall in memory of Mr Guest and to raise funds for Farleigh Hospice. It will be a brilliant night with lots of fun and laughter – just like Mr Guest would have wanted! I would like to thank you for all the kind raffle prize donations. Also, a big thank you to Scarlett and Logan’s mums who so kindly dressed up this week to sell raffle tickets for tonight. All of your support is hugely appreciated and shows our wonderful Maldon Court family community all coming together to help each other. It is incredibly humbling.

Nursery
This week, the children have been enjoying focusing on birds in winter and taking part in the RSPB Birdwatch. They made bird cakes to take home for their garden birds, along with a checklist so they can join in over the weekend. We hope the birds enjoy the treats they prepared!
During our walk around the school grounds, the children discussed the temperature and noticed how cold, windy, and sometimes frosty it can be in winter. They spotted some birds, saw that many tree branches are now bare, and even spotted a squirrel in a tree!

PRE-Reception
This week the children have been fascinated by the topic ‘dinosaurs’ and we have been busy making our own dinosaur fossils. We followed the step-by-step recipe to make a dough, added a special ingredient to make the fossil the correct colour which also had a special scent and printed the dinosaur inside to make a special fossil.

Form 1
This half term, Form 1 have been exploring the world of computers and technology. We are learning the importance of staying safe online and how to do so. As well as this, over the past couple of weeks we have been working hard on our mouse control, what buttons to press and learning the function of the keyboard. This week the children were challenged to writing their names, changing the font, colour and size and they were all able to do this independently which was fantastic! We are looking forward to future computing lessons where we will be furthering our skills, creating pictures using our mouse skills. Well done Form 1.

Form 3
This week in Form 3, we have been creating and interpreting graphs in our lessons. In our Geography lesson, we talked about the climate of the rainforest and looked at data on the average temperature and the average rainfall in a rainforest throughout the year. The children then created a line graph and a bar graph to represent the data. The children were then challenged to interpret the graphs to answer a range of questions- they were very excited to finally use their calculators for this! We then created bar graphs again in our science lesson. The children were tasked with investigating how many paper clips different magnets can hold. We discussed how important it is to only change one variable during the investigation to ensure that we conduct a fair test with accurate results.

During our science unit on Lifecycles, Form 5 worked in groups to research the lifecycle of a bird, an amphibian and an insect. Having collected their information, they produced an information leaflet and presented their findings to the rest of the class.

Cross Country
This week a group of Form 3 and 4 runners entered the Colchester Blackwater Sport Partnership's annual cross country event. This event is open to all partnership schools from the Maldon and Colchester districts and this year there were 20 schools competing. This was a true cross country race that had it all: atrocious weather, a muddy and in places water logged course, 120 runners per race and incredibly high racing standards.
Maldon Court had some truly exceptional results with Seb VB placing first in the Year 4 boys race. Scarlett placed second in the Year 4 girls race, with a special mention going to her for completing 800m of the course with only one shoe! The perseverance she showed was inspirational. Both Seb and Scarlett will now be invited to represent the Colchester Blackwater partnership against other districts in a regional event later in the year. Congratulations to Samuel who placed 4th in the Year 3 boys race, narrowly missing out on a regional place by seconds.
We are absolutley delighted to announce that the Year 4 boys team placed 2nd of 20 schools to earn the silver team medal and they will be visited by the partnership’s cordinator next week to be awarded ther medals. This is a huge achievement and we are so proud of them.
Beyond medals and placings though, we were all bowled over by all of the children’s resilience and determination. This race was run in brutal conditions and staff and parents were amazed to see that every child tackled the course with all their might, never once letting the conditions get the better of them.
Well done children and than you to the parents who cheered us on in the torrential rain, a true Maldon Court team effort.

Hockey - Essex Hockey Tournament
On Monday the Maldon Court hockey team were in action in the Under 11 Essex Boys Hockey tournament. This was a tournament played at an exceptionally high level with 8 other independent schools in attendance. All the children in the school have been training hard in hockey this year and the ten boys in the team were well prepared and really forward to this tournament. In some outstanding match play which included one of the most breathtaking goals scored at this level in many years Maldon Court were placed 4th in Essex, narrowly missing out on 3rd place on goal difference. A huge congratulations to this team of players who all have a very promising hockey future ahead of them and thoroughly deserve their success.
