Weekly Newsletter

Dear Parents,

This week we welcomed back Form 4 from their intrepid adventure at Danbury Outdoors and the school continues to be a hive of activity.

At the start of the week, Form 6 children completed their Bikeability course, learning how to ensure their bikes are safe to cycle before venturing out on the roads around Maldon. As always, the children were polite and behaved impeccably whilst out and about - Well done, Form 6.

As I walk around the school I have seen how the children are thoroughly enjoying learning about the whole school topic, ‘Space’. They are eager to share some of their newly acquired knowledge, from learning about astronomical units (which roughly equates to 150,000km) to the first moon landing to ‘Mrs Clark, did you know Saturn has 274 moons?’

Children attending Toot & Dood, LAMDA and piano lessons are continuing to develop their confidence and skills. It is lovely to hear poetry being performed and music being played with expression and feeling. Well done to the children who received their ‘Composition & Performance’ certificates this week.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Bank Holiday weekend and I look forward to seeing the children arriving smartly dressed for their class photographs on Tuesday.

Nursery

This week the children have started their journey up to the moon! Our role play area has been a Space Café, where the children have stopped on their way to the moon for refreshments. They have had lots of fun serving each other space delights, including Martian Macaroni and Space Squash.

The children have also been busy creating their own rocket. Using cardboard boxes and a range of materials, they have added to it each day, developing it throughout the week.

In our tuff tray, we explored “Button Moon”, with a large moon made from buttons for the children to thread and explore.

It has been another exciting week learning about space travel and what lies beyond Earth and in space.

RECEPTION

This week, Reception enjoyed continuing our whole school topic on Space and have learnt about our wonderful home planet – Earth. The children were fascinated to learn more about the world we live in and took part in thoughtful discussions about why it is so important to care for our planet. We discussed different ways to look after the Earth, such as turning the taps off when brushing our teeth, switching off lights when we leave a room and putting our rubbish in the recycling. We developed our fine motor skills by painting pictures of our wonderful planet.

FORM 4

Form 4 has been studying the story of The Iron Man and using it as inspiration for some lovely descriptive writing. This week, we used drama to explore the origins of the Iron Man. We created tableaus of our origin stories, interviewed characters, worked together to tell fantastical stories to one another and acted out scenarios in silence, there were some amazing facial expressions, and a lot of giggling. We have also been busy in science, creating circuits with different components and we have also made our own switches.

FORM 6 - Bikeability

Form 6 have enjoyed taking part in the Bikeability scheme this week. The children worked towards earning either their level 1 or level 2 award.

Bikeability Level 1 teaches you to:

  • Maintain your cycle: make sure your ride is in tip-top condition and make simple repairs

  • Glide: smooth, calm and collected

  • Control your bike: including setting off, cruising, slowing down, braking and stopping. You’ll even learn to pedal one handed

  • Pedal: without feeling wobbly or out of control

  • Be aware of your surroundings: looking behind and turning around obstacles

Bikeability Level 2 teaches you to:

  • Start and stop with more confidence

  • Pass stationary vehicles parked on a road

  • Understand the road: signals, signs and road markings

  • Negotiate the road: including quiet junctions, crossroads and roundabouts

  • Share the road with other vehicles.

All of the children who took part successfully earned one of the awards. Well done Form 6. Now the weather is improving, hopefully you will be out and about enjoying riding your bikes safely.

Form 1 and 2 Golf Club

Form 1 and 2 have made outstanding progress in their Golf Club this term. After a full afternoon of curriculum sport the children that have joined the club stay for an extra hour of golf during our club time. Over the last few weeks we have been battling some strong winds and it is wonderful to see the children learning to adapt their aim and swing type to account for the wind. The children’s swings have improved dramatically and we finish each session with a nearest the pin challenge: which the teachers are yet to win!

Well done Forms 1 and 2.
