Weekly Newsletter

Dear Parents,

It has been another busy and enjoyable week at Maldon Court and I am really proud to begin with some wonderful news for our whole school community.

Maldon Court has achieved the Gold School Games Mark as part of the Colchester School Sport Partnership. This nationally recognised badge of excellence celebrates a school’s commitment to PE, school sport and physical activity and achieving Gold is something of which we can all be extremely proud.

This award reflects the dedication of the whole school in ensuring that every pupil has the opportunity to enjoy positive physical experiences whether through PE lessons, competitive sport, clubs or just being active and having fun. A huge thank you must go to Mr Coyle and Miss Broadbridge for the enthusiasm and opportunities they provide and to our children who approach sport and physical activity with such energy and determination. Well done, Maldon Court!

Preparations are also well underway for our Harvest celebrations, with rehearsals in classrooms and one in the church. Thank you to all our families who have generously contributed Harvest donations. Your kindness and support are very much appreciated and will be distributed within the local area.

We are delighted to welcome our final new Eco-Schools representatives. Oscar, Albie and Archie who will be helping us consider new ways to care for our environment and make Maldon Court even more sustainable. I am looking forward to seeing their ideas develop over the coming year.

Reception children have also been out and about for Welly Wednesday, enjoying a visit to Leeches Garden. These opportunities to explore, investigate and learn outdoors are always a lovely and very popular part of their week. It works alongside Forest schools and this week the focus was on making hedgehog houses which linked in brilliantly to their theme this week on animals that hibernate.

This week’s Headteacher’s Award was awarded to Francesca for her outstanding effort, attitude and contribution to school life and for helping others. Well done, Fran.

Finally, I look forward to welcoming you all to All Saints' church on Tuesday at 2pm for our traditional Harvest Festival Service. As mentioned earlier, the children have been rehearsing hard and are really looking forward to singing and reading to you all.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. I hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Stars of the week

Nursery

This week has been the final part of our About Me topic, which we have enjoyed throughout September. We have been focusing on the things we love and our emotions, with the children talking about their favourite things, including items, activities and colours.

We have also been discussing our feelings and what makes us feel happy, sad, scared or excited. The children have had lots of fun exploring this through emotion cards and using mirrors to look at and copy different facial expressions. We have also used sensory objects and colourful scarves to explore how different things can make us feel.

It has been lovely to settle into the new school year, get to know all of the children properly and discover more about the things they enjoy and what makes them smile. We have had a wonderful September together and are looking forward to all the new learning and adventures still to come!

PRE-RECEPTION

Pre-Reception have had a super two weeks engaging in our class topic ‘The Colour Monster’.

We have discussed the different emotions in the story: happy, sad, angry, scared, calm and love in detail and the children have created their own colour monsters as well a large group one which is proudly displayed in the classroom.

The children have also enjoyed using the story spoons to support the story and have developed a brilliant understanding of the different emotions.

FORM 1

Form 1 have been thoroughly enjoying our new Science topic, ‘Who Am I?’ We began by learning all about our bodies and identifying some of the different bones in the human skeleton. We enjoyed using dog biscuit bones to create our own skeletons. We have now started exploring our five senses through lots of practical activities. To investigate our sense of smell, the children became scientists and took part in a fun ‘Guess the Smell’ experiment, using only their noses to identify a range of mystery scents!  We then focused on our sense of sight, where the children loved role-playing a visit to the opticians, taking turns to be the optician and patient and exploring how our eyes help us to see. Next week, we are very excited to put our taste buds to the test as we investigate our sense of taste with another fun, hands-on experiment. I wonder what flavours we will discover?

Well done Form 1.

FORM 2 Farmer LISSIE

We have been extremely lucky to welcome Farmer Lissie into Maldon Court, again! Form 2 were thrilled to hear that she would be coming into school to help us with our planters outside the school office! Farmer Lissie showed the children how to plant some daffodil bulbs, sew and drill in some spinach seeds and plant their very own Hyacinth. The children loved getting their hands dirty and planting their own plants to look after. Form 2 have been learning about the basic needs of plants and what they need to survive. Well done, Form 2 and thank you again, Farmer Lissie (aka Elisabeth Broadbridge).
